Kolymbetra, Mediterranean garden in Valley of Temples, Italy
The six-hectare garden contains olive groves, citrus orchards, and over 300 plant species between the Temple of Castor and Temple of Vulcan.
In 480 BC, Carthaginian workers constructed aqueducts and a large pool in this location, as documented by ancient historian Diodorus Siculus.
The garden demonstrates traditional Sicilian irrigation methods with clay channels and roof tiles that distribute water through the agricultural landscape.
Visitors enter through a gate near the Temple of Castor and Pollux, where paths lead through groves of orange, lemon, almond, and mulberry trees.
The garden preserves rare citrus varieties including Sanguigno oranges and Femminello lemons, protecting genetic heritage from extinction.
