Temple of Athena

The Temple of Athena is an ancient Greek sanctuary in Agrigento featuring Ionic columns and marble construction. The structure stands on elevated ground and overlooks the surrounding landscape from its strategic position.

The structure was built in the 5th century BCE during a period of growth and rebuilding in Acragas. This era saw the creation of many new temples and public buildings throughout the region.

The temple was dedicated to Athena and served as a place where local people gathered for religious observances and celebrations. Visitors came to present offerings to the goddess of wisdom and participate in important community rituals.

The temple sits within the Valley of the Temples complex and is accessible via a walking path. Wear sturdy shoes and bring sun protection for the exposed hilltop location, which offers limited shade.

The structure features a rare design with columns only at the front and back, setting it apart from most Greek temples of its time. This amphiprostyle arrangement was a deliberate choice that made the interior space more open and light-filled.
