Lago del Mis, Artificial lake in Sospirolo, Italy.
Lake Mis is an artificial reservoir in the Dolomites that spreads across a valley at about 1,400 feet (427 meters) surrounded by high mountain ridges. The shoreline is lined with meadows, forests, and rocky peaks that shape the landscape.
The lake came into being in 1962 when a dam was built to create a hydroelectric power source for the region. This project reshaped the valley and continues to serve as an energy resource today.
The area around the lake grew from mountain communities that relied on mining and farming for survival. Walking along the shore and through nearby villages, you can see how people adapted their lives to this rugged landscape.
The lake is accessible with camping areas, picnic spots, and a beach available for visitors throughout the year. Two information centers around the lake provide guidance on local trails and activities in the surrounding mountains.
The water changes color throughout the day, reflecting the surrounding peaks and shifting from bright blue to grey and green depending on the light and clouds. This constant play of colors makes the lake feel alive as you move around it.
