Certosa di Vedana

Certosa di Vedana is a Carthusian monastery located on the slopes of Piz di Vedana at around 430 meters elevation. The complex contains a central cloister surrounded by individual monk cells, a church with art pieces, and various communal buildings arranged according to monastic design.

Founded in 1456, the monastery became an important center for Carthusian religious life in this alpine region. Significant renovations in 1882 following new ownership brought the complex to its present-day appearance and reinforced its role as a functioning monastic community.

A community of cloistered nuns now inhabits this place, dedicating their lives to prayer within its walls. The rhythm of daily life here follows centuries-old monastic traditions that shape how the space is used and experienced.

The monastery is located roughly 10 kilometers from Belluno and accessible by local roads winding through the mountain landscape. Visits are restricted due to the cloistered nature of the community, so advance arrangements should be made through proper channels.

The church interior holds notable altar paintings, including works by Venetian artist Sebastiano Ricci depicting the Baptism of Jesus and the Madonna with Child flanked by Saint Bruno and Saint Hugo. These pieces represent a connection to Renaissance artistic traditions found in the Veneto region.
