Monte Cupolino

Monte Cupolino, Mountain summit in Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, Italy

Monte Cupolino is a mountain summit in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines that stands at 1,852 meters between the towns of Fanano and San Marcello Piteglio. The peak sits within a landscape of interconnected ridge trails with marked paths of different difficulty levels and rest shelters along the way.

The area gained recognition through 14th-century documentation that noted its geographical position in the mountain range. A refuge was built much later in 1878 to serve mountaineers venturing into this part of the Apennines.

The Duca degli Abruzzi refuge has served as a gathering place for mountaineers since its establishment and remains a social hub today. Visitors naturally meet there to share stories and prepare for hikes across the surrounding peaks.

Start your hike early in the day and wear sturdy boots along with weather-appropriate clothing. The terrain can be slippery after rain, so take breaks regularly and pay attention to trail markings to stay on the correct path.

Lake Scaffaiolo, located a short distance away, formed through natural erosion rather than glacial action and has no natural springs feeding it. This water body stands out as an unusual feature for such a high-altitude location.
