Walls of Bologna

The walls of Bologna form a defensive system that spans several kilometers and includes numerous gates and towers. This structure encircles the historic center with an almost complete ring of fortifications.

The walls were built between the 12th and 15th centuries and reflect the evolution of defense technology. They served as a response to the political and military needs of the medieval city.

The gates that remain today serve as gathering places for residents and show different building styles from different eras. They reveal how the city adapted its defenses over time.

The walls are accessible year-round and run along paths that are easy to explore on foot. The best starting point is at one of the preserved gates, where you can follow the circuit.

At Porta Govese there is an inhabited medieval gate tower where visitors can stay overnight in a converted historical apartment. This is one of the few places where you can actually sleep inside an old fortification.
