Palazzo Ruffo della Scaletta, 17th-century palace on Riviera di Chiaia, Naples, Italy
Palazzo Ruffo della Scaletta is a 17th-century palace on Riviera di Chiaia in Naples, whose interior is dominated by an octagonal staircase crowned by a dome. The space is embellished with neoclassical stuccoes and marble statues distributed through multiple levels.
The building was initially constructed for the Carafa family and underwent significant neoclassical renovations between 1832 and 1835 under engineer Francesco Saverio Ferrari's direction. This renovation phase fundamentally changed the palace's appearance and adapted it to contemporary tastes.
The palace displays preserved frescoes and stucco decorations that reflect different phases of its use as an aristocratic residence. Visitors can see today the ornate wall paintings in certain rooms, showing how wealthy families decorated their homes.
The building underwent comprehensive restoration in 2022, with work done on exterior facades and decorative elements in the atrium that are now in good condition. Access is easy to navigate through the well-maintained architecture, and interior spaces offer clear paths through the various levels.
The palace was home to a private menagerie of exotic animals during Tiberio Carafa's ownership and served as a base for hunting expeditions on its grounds. This use demonstrates the substantial resources and distinctive interests of the original owners.
