Palazzo delle Congregazioni stands on Piazza del Gesù Nuovo, to the left of the Gesù Nuovo church, and forms the Jesuit insula with the church and the Casa Profesa. Until the end of the 19th century it had a single storey and a plain facade, shown in old engravings and lithographs; the enlargement gave it a neo-Romanesque facade. Two portals open off the front, one to the Liceo Genovesi, the other to a courtyard facing the church transept clad in pyramid-shaped bugnato.

The palace was designed as the seat of the lay congregations guided by the Jesuits, and its construction began in 1592. According to Carlo Celano it originally housed five oratories: the Nobles or Knights, the Noble Boys, the Artisans (later called the Ladies), the Doctors and Merchants, and the Bourgeois. In 1888 it became the seat of the Antonio Genovesi classical lyceum, the third oldest in Naples.

The palace was built for five lay congregations guided by the Jesuits, listed by Carlo Celano: Nobles or Knights, Noble Boys, Artisans (later called Ladies), Doctors and Merchants, and Burghers. The Oratory of the Nobles, frescoed by Giovanni Lanfranco from 1646 with a Nativity of Mary by Battistello Caracciolo on the ceiling, now serves as the school's assembly hall.

The palace is located in the historic center and is easily accessible on foot from nearby Metro stations. The surrounding area is densely built, so allow some time to orient yourself when arriving in this part of the city.
