Palazzo della Provincia, Provincial government palace in Piazza del Municipio, Livorno, Italy
The Palazzo della Provincia is the provincial government building at Piazza del Municipio in Livorno, featuring monumental architecture with large symmetrical windows and a central balcony overlooking the square. Its facade displays the classical proportions typical of administrative palaces built for formal state functions.
The original structure was built in 1605 for Ferdinando I de Medici but suffered extensive damage during World War II. Architect Ghino Venturi reconstructed it after the war, blending the restored shell with contemporary design.
The palace contains important artworks including the painting 'Saluto alla bandiera' by Italian artist Plinio Nomellini displayed in its halls. These pieces reflect the artistic heritage that shaped the city over time.
The building functions as the administrative headquarters for the Province of Livorno with limited public access. Visitors should check beforehand as entry is restricted to official business hours only.
During square renovations in 2015, workers discovered remnants of the original 17th-century structure buried beneath the current building. These findings reveal how different historical layers remain hidden under the modern surface.
