Nature Reserve Bosco di Alcamo, Regional nature reserve on Mount Bonifato, Alcamo, Italy.
Nature Reserve Bosco di Alcamo is a protected forest area on Mount Bonifato featuring a mix of pine forests and Mediterranean plants adapted to limestone soils. The terrain offers different elevation zones, each with distinct vegetation patterns and landscape features.
The area once had broad-leaved forest cover before undergoing deliberate reforestation in the early 1900s to restore depleted woodland. New pine and cypress plantings transformed the mountain's vegetation and helped stabilize the terrain.
The mountain has long served as a crossroads for different periods of human settlement, with pathways connecting ruins and archaeological remains that tell of ancient occupation. These traces form an important part of how locals view the landscape and its past.
The reserve has three marked hiking trails of varying lengths, all starting and finishing at accessible points near the base of the mountain. Sturdy shoes are essential since the paths cross rocky uneven ground, and bringing plenty of water is important given the exposed terrain.
The reserve provides raw materials for traditional crafts, including fibers for rope making and dwarf palms for broom production. This ongoing use of plant resources connects the forest to centuries-old local manufacturing traditions.
