Mount Bonifato

Mount Bonifato rises to 825 meters with steep southern faces contrasting gentle northern slopes that descend toward the city of Alcamo. The mountain sits within a natural reserve spanning roughly 280 hectares, crisscrossed by hiking trails through pine forests and Mediterranean plant life.

Archaeological digs have uncovered residential structures and artifacts spanning various periods, with evidence of habitation dating back to the 6th-7th century. A sanctuary was built here in the 16th century, marking a shift from ancient settlement to religious significance.

The sanctuary on the peak draws visitors to religious festivals, especially in September, when celebrations bring together people seeking spiritual connection. These gatherings reflect how the mountain remains woven into the religious identity of the region.

The climb requires moderate fitness, with trails passing through pine forests offering varied terrain, especially on the steeper southern sides. Bring comfortable hiking shoes and plenty of water, particularly during summer months.

Tucked into the northwestern section stands La Funtanazza, a medieval water cistern that once supplied the surrounding area. This forgotten reservoir reveals how ancient engineering solved the mountain's water challenges.
