Riserva naturale Somadida, Nature reserve in Province of Belluno, Italy
Riserva naturale Somadida is a 1676 hectare (4,140 acre) protected area stretching from the Ansiei stream to the dolomitic formations of Marmarole and Sorapiss in northern Belluno Province. The reserve contains several forest types, ranging from mixed silver fir, spruce, and beech woodlands at lower elevations to larch and pine forests at higher altitudes.
Known until 1797 as Vizza di San Marco, the forest supplied the Venetian Republic with timber of exceptional quality for shipbuilding. This long history of resource use shaped the landscape in ways still visible in the forest composition today.
Timber production shaped the region for centuries, and this working forest heritage remains visible in how the land is managed today. Visitors walking the trails encounter a landscape that continues to balance human use with natural processes.
An information center with displays and a forest library in a mountain hut near the entrance help orient visitors to the area. Multiple marked trails of varying difficulty offer options for different hiking abilities, from easy walks to more demanding routes.
European larch trees grow in steep terrain and remote areas, marking their southern limit in this region and creating rare alpine conditions. These marginal habitats host specialized plant species that are less common elsewhere in the Alps.
