Sanctuary of San Besso, Mountain shrine in Valprato Soana, Italy
The Sanctuary of San Besso stands at 2,019 meters altitude within Gran Paradiso National Park, built against a 60-meter monolithic rock face.
Construction of the sanctuary began with two chapels in 1548 and 1618, which were merged into a single structure completed in 1669.
The sanctuary hosts two annual pilgrimages on August 10 and December 1, connecting communities from surrounding valleys through traditional processions.
Visitors can reach the sanctuary through a two-hour hiking trail from Campiglia Soana, with dedicated parking areas available at the starting point.
Recent renovations in 2020 revealed previously hidden frescoes and paintings dating back to the early 1800s beneath layers of old construction materials.
