The Monte Genzana e Alto Gizio Reserve spans 3,164 hectares, extending from the Gizio River at 530 meters to Mount Genzana at 2,170 meters elevation.
The Italian government established Monte Genzana e Alto Gizio as a protected area through Regional Law 116 on November 28, 1996, to preserve the natural corridor.
The Cantelmo Castle within the reserve territory represents centuries of local heritage, while environmental education programs connect visitors with conservation practices.
Multiple marked hiking trails traverse the reserve, connecting river ecosystems, mixed woodlands, and alpine grasslands, with detailed maps available at the visitor center.
The reserve hosts 691 plant species and functions as an ecological corridor between Abruzzo National Park and Majella National Park, supporting Marsican brown bear movements.
