Riserva naturale guidata Monte Genzana e Alto Gizio is a 3,160-hectare regional nature reserve established in 1996, entirely within the municipality of Pettorano sul Gizio in the province of L'Aquila. It is Abruzzo's largest reserve, ranging from 530 m at the Gizio river to 2,170 m on Monte Genzana, bounded by Monte Mattone to the north and Toppe Vurgo to the south. The Riaccio stream runs through it.

The reserve gained protected status in 1996 through regional legislation aimed at preserving this natural corridor. This designation emerged to safeguard the landscape connection between neighboring national parks.

The reserve's name comes from Monte Genzana and the Gizio river with its valley. It is managed by the municipality of Pettorano sul Gizio together with Legambiente Abruzzo, and in 2020 it received the Ecotourism Oscar. The rare leafless orchid Epipogium aphyllum, protected under CITES, reappeared here in 2020 after years of absence.

Marked hiking trails traverse the reserve through different elevation zones and habitats, with maps available at the visitor center. Prepare for varying conditions since the terrain ranges from river areas to mountain zones.

The reserve functions as a natural bridge between two major national parks, allowing wildlife such as bears to move freely across the landscape. This corridor role plays a vital part in protecting animal populations in the region.
