Church of Saint Eustace, First Romanesque church in Campo di Giove, Italy.
The Church of Saint Eustace is a First Romanesque church featuring a central nave built with stone masonry characteristic of early medieval construction. The simple geometric form and solid walls reflect how religious buildings were designed during this architectural period.
This church was built on the site of an earlier temple dedicated to Jupiter dating from around 300 BC in the Roman era. The reuse of sacred locations reveals how Christian communities later claimed places of spiritual significance for their own faith.
Four painted panels showing scenes from Saint Eustace's life were created by Maestro di Campo Giove and originally decorated the altar. These works reveal how local artists depicted sacred stories and what mattered most to the community who worshipped here.
Access is available during regular prayer times and visitors are welcome to explore the architecture and surroundings. It is best to be respectful and follow local guidelines since this remains an active place of worship.
The building falls under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sulmona-Valva, which has overseen religious sites in this region for centuries. This connection links the community to a broader network of faith.
