Rifugio Vandelli, Mountain shelter in Sorapiss group, Dolomites, Italy.
Rifugio Vandelli is a mountain shelter located at 1926 meters elevation in the Sorapiss group of the Dolomites. The hut sits near a turquoise lake and provides overnight accommodation and meals for climbers and hikers traveling through the range.
The shelter was first built in 1821 by the Pfalzgau section and underwent several reconstructions due to damage from mountain hazards. It reached its current form after major renovation in 1966, which restored stability to the structure.
The hut bears the name of a local mountain guide and serves as a gathering place for those seeking rest after demanding hikes in the peaks. It functions as a social hub where climbers and trekkers share meals and stories about their experiences in the high mountains.
The hut can be reached via trail 215 or trail 217 in roughly two hours from the lower starting points. Sturdy footwear and proper mountain gear are important since the paths are steep and can become hazardous in poor weather.
The hut features simple sleeping rooms with six to eight beds each, allowing visitors to stay in small communal arrangements. Hot water is available on a token-operated system, which reflects the self-reliant character of mountain refuge life.
