Antermoia refuge, Mountain shelter in Mazzin, Italy.
The Antermoia refuge is a mountain hut in the Catinaccio massif of the Dolomites, sitting beside a glacial lake at around 2,497 feet (760 m) elevation. It offers sleeping quarters and meals to hikers and climbers passing through this part of the mountains.
The hut was built in 1911 by the German-Austrian Alpine Association, during a period when mountaineering in the Dolomites was growing rapidly. After World War I, the Società degli Alpinisti Tridentini took over its management in 1921.
The hut serves traditional dishes from Trentino, including polenta and local cheeses, which greet visitors as soon as they step inside. A winter room stays open year-round, offering shelter to climbers even outside the main season.
The hut can be reached on marked trails from Gardeccia, Val Duron, or Val di Dona, and is generally open from June to October. Weather can change fast at this height, so bring layers and proper footwear regardless of the forecast.
The lake just in front of the hut shifts color through the seasons, going from deep blue in summer to a duller grey-green as autumn sets in. This change is visible from the hut's doorway and gives visitors a direct sense of how the alpine year moves.
