Rifugio Carlo Franchetti, Mountain refuge in Pietracamela, Italy.
The Rifugio Carlo Franchetti is a stone and wood shelter located high in the mountains between Corno Grande and Corno Piccolo peaks. The structure houses sleeping quarters where climbers and hikers can rest during their time in this high alpine zone.
The hut was built by the Italian Alpine Club of Rome in the late 1950s and opened in 1960. It emerged as part of the movement to support mountaineering in this important alpine region.
The refuge takes its name from Baron Carlo Franchetti, an alpinist and cave explorer who left his mark on mountain exploration. Staying here connects visitors to that history of discovery.
The accommodation offers two dormitory rooms with around 20 sleeping spaces for guests. Visitors should bring a sleeping bag or arrange for bedding once they arrive at the hut.
Near the hut sits a glacial formation that once extended much further down the mountain. Visitors can observe how this ice has retreated over time, a visible reminder of changing conditions in the high peaks.
