The shelter was founded in 1922 and celebrated its centenary in 2022 after major renovation work. These improvements modernized the facilities while reinforcing its role in the mountain landscape.
The refuge kitchen prepares regional Abruzzi specialties, including traditional pasta dishes made in cooperation with local shepherds and dairy producers. These meals reflect the mountain community's connection to pastoral traditions and local ingredients.
Two marked trails lead to the shelter: a 90-minute path from Campo Felice via route 1C and another from Rocca di Mezzo through path 1A. Both routes are well marked, and it is wise to bring plenty of water and sturdy footwear.
The cooperative Equo Rifugio has managed the shelter since 2001 and organizes educational events on mountain safety, meteorology, and environmental care. These programs introduce visitors to the challenges and specifics of high mountain living.
