Statua del Redentore

The Statua del Redentore is a bronze statue atop Mount Ortobene that overlooks the city of Nuoro. It measures approximately 4 meters in height and sits at roughly 925 meters elevation.

The statue was created in 1901 by sculptor Vincenzo Jerace in response to Pope Leo XIII's request for Christ the Redeemer monuments across Italian regions. This work was part of a broader religious initiative that resulted in similar sculptures being erected throughout the country.

The statue draws crowds each August 29th for a celebration featuring traditional Sardinian songs, dances, and regional dress. Visitors experience these living customs that locals have maintained for generations.

The site sits high on a mountain, so expect some climbing and variable weather conditions. The monument underwent major restoration work in 2012 after weathering more than a century of mountain exposure.

The sculptor incorporated a child's face hidden behind the right foot of Christ, symbolizing humanity's connection to the divine. This subtle detail reveals the artistic depth built into the work.
