Torre Materita

Torre Materita is a stone structure perched on a ridge overlooking the Mediterranean, characterized by thick walls and strategically positioned defensive features. The building shows various construction phases and modifications that document its evolution from military stronghold to residential dwelling.

Monks from the Certosa di San Giacomo monastery built the structure in 1378 as protection against pirate raids on the island of Capri. This defensive purpose shaped the design and location of the building for centuries.

Swedish physician and writer Axel Munthe resided in the converted tower from 1908 to 1943, writing his book The Story of San Michele there.

The site is accessible via the main road from Anacapri toward the Punta Carena lighthouse, with regular bus services passing nearby. It works well as a stopping point when walking or traveling along this route.
