Anacapri

Anacapri is a commune on the western side of Capri island, sitting at 275 meters elevation with traditional Mediterranean buildings lining narrow streets. The town spreads across gentle hills and provides access to several churches and the well-known Villa San Michele property.

The ancient Scala Fenicia with 921 steps was built by Greek settlers and served as the main connection from the mountain to the port until the 19th century. Later, the growth of fishing and farming shaped the lives of islanders for generations.

The name comes from the Greek settlement "Anak" and refers to the upper region of the island. The narrow alleys and whitewashed houses show the daily rhythm of a mountain village where locals and visitors gather in the squares.

You reach this place by bus from Marina Grande after a ferry journey from Naples or Sorrento. The steep streets require sturdy shoes and patience while exploring the different levels and staircases.

A chairlift connects Piazza Vittoria to the island's highest point at 589 meters, from where views spread across the Gulf of Naples. This ride is one of the few ways to see the entire coastline and the region's islands at once.
