Monte Solaro

Monte Solaro is a mountain on the island of Capri reaching about 589 meters in height that naturally divides the island into eastern and western sections. From the top, views extend across the surrounding sea, sheltered coves, and on clear days toward distant coastal areas.

The mountain held military importance during conflicts between British and French forces in the early 1800s, with a blockhouse called Fortino di Bruto serving as a defensive position. This fortification played a role in struggles for control over the island group.

The mountain holds the Eremo di Santa Maria a Cetrella, a sanctuary visited for centuries by islanders and travelers seeking moments of reflection. The small shrine sits quietly above the landscape, offering views that have drawn people to this elevated spot for spiritual reasons across generations.

The summit is reachable via a short chairlift ride from Anacapri, allowing a quick trip to the top, or you can take an extended hiking path from below. The hilltop can be windy, so dress appropriately, and in warm weather it is best to go early in the day to avoid heat.

The slopes host more than 900 plant species, including rare varieties like lithodora rosmarinifolia, orchids, and other Mediterranean shrubs that attract botanists. This plant diversity makes it an important location for nature enthusiasts who want to see these particular plant communities.
