Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo

The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo is a baroque church with an octagonal floor plan, featuring detailed interior decorations, marble altars, and elaborate stucco embellishments throughout. The space impresses through its symmetrical design and the gleaming surfaces of marble and tile work.

Construction of this church began in 1698 under architect Domenico Antonio Vaccaro. The building later served as a military storage facility during conflicts between French and English forces from 1806 to 1808.

The floor displays a large majolica tile mosaic depicting the Garden of Eden, showing how local artisans expressed religious themes through this craft. Visitors can observe this traditional artistic style while walking through the church.

Visitors explore the church interior from an elevated wooden walkway that circles the perimeter of the main hall. This arrangement allows you to view the floor mosaics from above and see the entire space clearly.

Seven interior chapels are each fitted with colored majolica tile floors, each representing different symbolic meanings. This arrangement makes the building a special example of how tiles were used to create meaning in religious spaces.
