Torre del Pegol, Medieval defensive tower in Brescia, Italy

Torre del Pegol is a stone defensive tower in central Brescia with a tall structure and elaborately detailed wall surfaces. On its northern side sits a clock, and on the western side a fountain with four statues representing regional rivers and lakes adorns the structure.

Construction of the tower began in 1254 as part of Brescia's medieval defensive system protecting the city. Later a Renaissance fountain was added to complement its military function and enhance the structure.

The carvings on the walls show figures including a saint and a human face adorned with a flower, reflecting artistic traditions of the time. These ornaments reveal the craftsmanship and creative ideas that shaped medieval Brescia.

The tower sits on Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi in the center and is easy to reach since several historical sites are nearby. You can view and photograph the structure from outside throughout the year.

The four statues on the fountain do not represent random bodies of water but specifically reference the Mella and Garza rivers or Lake Garda and Lake Iseo in the surrounding region. These local references show how the artwork honors Brescia's geographic connection to its landscape.
