Sant'Emidio alle Grotte, Baroque church in Ascoli Piceno, Italy.

Sant'Emidio alle Grotte is a small Baroque church in Ascoli Piceno, built 1717–1720/21 to Giuseppe Giosafatti's design. A travertine façade stands against the tufa cliff and precedes three natural grottoes turned into oratories. In the central grotto, pillars added by Giosafatti divide the space into three small naves under brick cross vaults, and the rear wall is left rough where the tombs were cut.

The grottoes were a Christian necropolis by 250 and held Saint Emygdius's remains for over seven centuries. The present church was built in 1717–1720/21 on the initiative of Bishop Giovanni Gambi, a relative of Pope Clement XI, as a collective ex-voto after the 1703 earthquakes that struck Ascoli Piceno but caused no deaths or serious damage. Giuseppe Giosafatti designed it, inspired by Bernini and Pietro da Cortona.

The name "alle Grotte" comes from the three natural caves at the foot of the Campo Parignano hill, once monk cells, the saint's burial place and an oratory. The central cave is divided by pillars into three small naves under brick cross vaults. The rear wall was left torn, showing the loculi and graves where Emygdius and his disciples lay. The church is part of Ascoli's "itinerario emidiano".

The small church stands apart from the city centre, opposite the former church of Sant'Ilario on the slopes of Campo Parignano in the northern part of Ascoli Piceno, in a green and silent spot. The interior is carved into three natural grottoes, so expect damp surfaces and dim light; the travertine statue of the saint stands behind the single altar.

The rear of the central grotto was left untouched so visitors can still see the torn loculi and graves where the saint and his disciples were buried. In 1943, restoration work opened a tunnel to a further grotto containing a small cemetery and an arcosolium.
