Torre delle Saline

Torre delle Saline is a coastal fortification in Stintino with a round, conical shape built from local stone. The structure has two levels connected by a central pillar that supports the vaulted ceilings above, creating distinct chambers at each floor.

The tower was built in 1572 to protect salt production and tuna fishing operations along the Sardinian coast. It was constructed during the period of Catalan-Aragonese control, when such defense towers were needed against pirate raids and coastal threats.

The name comes from the salt marshes that once surrounded this structure and were central to the local economy. Walking around it, you can sense how closely military defense and everyday work were linked here.

The entrance is located four meters above ground and was originally accessed by a retractable rope ladder, making it harder for attackers to enter. Keep in mind that the interior spaces are confined and access to the upper level may be limited depending on maintenance or conservation work.

Three gun ports on the lower floor are arranged in a radial pattern and also served as ventilation openings for the interior chambers. This dual function reveals how defense and everyday practicality were combined in the tower's design.
