Area marina protetta Isola dell'Asinara

The Asinara Marine Protected Area is a sea reserve near Porto Torres that surrounds the island and covers a large expanse of water. It consists of different zones with varying levels of protection to safeguard marine life and underwater landscapes.

The reserve gained official protection status in the early 2000s after conservation efforts started in the 1960s. Decades of planning and advocacy led to the establishment of comprehensive safeguards for the marine environment.

The marine reserve contains three distinct protection zones, each maintaining different levels of preservation for marine life and geological formations.

Access to the area is by boat from the ports of Porto Torres and Stintino, and advance booking is wise. Guided tours are available, and arranging them ahead of time helps secure your spot.

The western section has rocky seabeds with seasonal currents that create shifting conditions for exploration. The eastern zone features sandy bottoms that slope down into deeper waters, offering different viewing opportunities.
