Ossario austro-ungarico dell'Asinara

The Austro-Hungarian Ossuary is a memorial structure on the slopes of Monte Ruda, accessed by a long staircase, featuring four Latin crosses on its facade and bronze inscriptions. Inside are eighteen glass cases holding bone remains, accompanied by three religious paintings.

The memorial was built in 1936 following legislation from 1931 to commemorate Austro-Hungarian prisoners of war. They died during World War I on Asinara Island under difficult circumstances.

The site honors soldiers from a distant empire, serving as a place where loss transcends national boundaries. Visitors sense how this memorial bridges different cultures through shared human suffering.

The site is located near Stagno Lungo road and is currently closed to the public. It is wise to contact local authorities beforehand to inquire about possible access options.

The ossuary holds the remains of over 7,000 soldiers who died from cholera and typhus after an exhausting march through Albania. This tragic episode connects European history with a remote Sicilian island.
