Asinara National Park, National park on Asinara Island, Italy
The white limestone cliffs and Mediterranean vegetation cover this 52-square-kilometer island, creating numerous distinct habitats for native species.
The island functioned as a quarantine station and maximum security prison from 1885 until 1997, when it was transformed into a national park.
The park maintains several former prison buildings, which now serve as research centers and museums documenting the island's history.
Visitors must obtain permits and can only access the island through authorized boat services departing from Porto Torres harbor.
White donkeys roam freely throughout the park, representing a rare albino population that developed through natural isolation on the island.
