Palazzo Donati, Medieval tower and architectural complex in central Florence, Italy.
Palazzo Donati is a medieval private tower in central Florence built from stone and featuring original architectural details from its period. The structure stands out for its height and traditional construction methods that were typical of wealthy residential buildings from the Middle Ages.
The tower was built in the Middle Ages by the influential Donati family, who held considerable power in Florence during the 13th century. Over time the building was preserved and remains today as one of the last examples of private architecture from these wealthy families.
The tower was built by a powerful Florentine family to display their status and influence in the city, following a practice common among wealthy households of the time. Walking around it today, you can feel the connection between this structure and the social life of medieval Florence.
The building can be visited from April through October, with access to a rooftop terrace for views. From this elevated point, visitors can look out over the roofs and towers of the old city.
The rooftop terrace features a heated bathtub with views over Florence's skyline. On clear evenings, guests can watch the fireworks that light up the sky on June 24th, when the city celebrates its patron saint.
