The Torre di Pugnochiuso is a watchtower on the Adriatic coast near Vieste, built with thick stone walls and positioned to offer wide views across the sea. The structure stands at an elevated point that allowed its occupants to observe movement on the water and along the shoreline.
The tower was built in 1568 as part of a major coastal fortification program under the Kingdom of Naples. It served as a defensive point against raids and attacks from corsairs and sea raiders who targeted communities along the shore.
The tower functioned as one station in a network of coastal lookout posts that transmitted messages using smoke by day and fire by night. This signaling system connected communities across the entire region and helped warn residents of danger.
Access to the site is best gained by following the marked path from Scialmarino bay, which winds through Mediterranean vegetation to the tower. The route is well-trodden but visitors should bring sturdy footwear and plenty of water.
