Villa Trabia alle Terre Rosse, Historic villa in Libertà district, Palermo, Italy
Villa Trabia alle Terre Rosse is a neoclassical U-shaped building in the Libertà district of Palermo, with two floors and a central courtyard. It can be reached through several gates on Piazza Luigi Scalia, Via Damiani Almeyda, and Via Antonio Salinas, and the park surrounding the building contains many tree species including palms, oaks, araucarias, and conifers.
In 1740, the San Francesco di Paola monastery granted a plot of land in the red earth area between Monte Pellegrino, Gallo, and Billiemi, and the estate began to take shape as a private residence. Over time the property changed hands several times before passing to the city of Palermo.
The ground floor of the villa houses a public multimedia library that locals use regularly for reading and research. The upper floors hold municipal offices, so the building serves both the neighborhood and the city administration at the same time.
The property has several entry gates on different streets, so it is easy to enter from different directions and walk through the park along various routes. The building houses public services, meaning part of it is open during normal office and library hours.
The park contains a baroque fountain with a triton statue and a stone bridge with four arches that crosses part of the grounds and offers an unexpected view over different levels of the park. Two greenhouses built specifically for orchid cultivation are also still standing on the property.
