Villa Zito, Picture gallery in Via della Libertà, Palermo, Italy
Villa Zito is a picture gallery housed in an 18th-century palace on Via della Libertà in Palermo. The building contains over one thousand artworks focusing on Sicilian artistic production from the 17th to the 20th century.
The building started as a country house belonging to Gaspare Scicli before being purchased by merchant Francesco Zito in 1909. Its transformation into an art museum preserved the artistic history of Sicily under a single roof.
The gallery displays works by artists who expressed Sicilian identity through painting across centuries. These pieces show how creators from different periods viewed and interpreted their homeland.
The museum has exhibition areas, a cafe with indoor and outdoor seating, and a bookshop with art catalogs. Visitors can spend time exploring the different collection sections at their own pace and take breaks as needed.
The collection divides into three sections: Baroque paintings, 19th-century Grand Tour landscapes, and 20th-century cultural narratives. This organization helps visitors understand how artistic thinking evolved across different periods.
