The Museum Laboratory of the Mind occupies a pavilion of the former psychiatric hospital, presenting mental health treatment methods through interactive exhibits and historical artifacts.
Founded in 1548, Santa Maria della Pietà operated as a psychiatric institution until 1999, when it transformed into a specialized museum following the implementation of mental health reforms.
The museum collection includes medical equipment, patient belongings, and installations that demonstrate the evolution of psychiatric care practices from the 16th to the 20th century.
Located at Piazza Santa Maria della Pietà 5, the museum received 2,000 visitors in 2021 and offers wheelchair accessibility throughout its 20,000-square-meter complex.
Artist Gianfranco Baieri lived within the institution as both a patient and attendant, contributing to the documentation of daily life in the psychiatric hospital.
