Villa Pigneto del Marchese Sacchetti, Baroque villa ruins in Pineta Sacchetti, Italy
Villa Pigneto del Marchese Sacchetti was a Baroque residence at the foot of Monte Mario in Rome featuring three tiered gardens linked by symmetric staircases. The remaining ruins of the structure now lie partially buried underground within the public park Pineta Sacchetti and can be reached from Via della Pineta Sacchetti.
Cardinal Giulio Sacchetti commissioned architect Pietro da Cortona in the early 1630s to build this residence during an early period of Roman Baroque architecture. After its construction, the villa became an important example of noble suburban living in this area of Rome.
The frescoes on the interior walls showed stories of David painted by Pietro da Cortona, representing religious subjects that were important to the family who lived here.
The ruins lie partially underground and are difficult to spot, so it helps to know the exact location before visiting the park. Wear comfortable shoes since the ground is uneven and the remains are scattered across the area.
An underground aquifer beneath the building accelerated its deterioration significantly, eventually forcing the family to abandon the property. This water problem was common for estates in this part of Rome where moisture weakened foundations.
