Forte Braschi, Military fort in Trionfale district, Rome, Italy
Forte Braschi is a military fort in the Trionfale district of Rome, Italy, spanning 8.2 hectares (20 acres) along Via della Pineta Sacchetti. The defensive structures include casemates, ramparts, and loopholes integrated into the urban fabric.
Construction began in 1877 as part of an entrenched camp around Rome consisting of fifteen forts. The structure served to defend the city after Italian unification and remained in military use well into the 20th century.
The name comes from Cardinal Romoaldo Braschi-Onesti, the former owner of the land where the military structure was built. His family belonged to the prominent Roman noble houses that held great influence during the 18th and 19th centuries.
The fort now houses the headquarters of the Italian External Intelligence Service AISE and military administrative units, making it off-limits to the public. The outer walls and gates are visible from the street, but entry to the grounds is restricted.
On May 29, 1931, anarchist Michele Schirru was executed here for plotting to assassinate Mussolini. The execution took place in the casemates, where military administrative offices are still located today.
