Guglielmi Castle, Italian national heritage castle on Isola Maggiore, Lake Trasimeno, Italy.
Guglielmi Castle is a late 19th-century private residence on the southern tip of Isola Maggiore, the only inhabited island in Lake Trasimeno in Umbria. The building rises over several floors, with wide terraces on each level that open toward the water on multiple sides.
A senator had the castle built in 1887 as a summer residence and held the inauguration in 1894. Over the following century it changed hands several times before receiving national heritage status.
The name of the castle comes from the family who lived there for generations and gradually shaped the building to match their way of life. Visitors walking around the grounds can still see the wide terraces that frame the lake and once served as the center of daily family life.
Isola Maggiore is reached by ferry from Tuoro sul Trasimeno or Passignano sul Trasimeno, with no other way to reach it. The castle itself is not open to the public, so it is worth checking the current situation before making the trip.
Although the castle is listed as national heritage, restoration work stopped in 2010 when a private company went bankrupt and left the project unfinished. Since then the building has been left to deteriorate, making it a rare case where protected status has not been enough to prevent ongoing decay.
