The stone fortress stands on a strategic rock formation near the historic center of Susa, providing observation points across the surrounding Alpine valleys.
The castle gained prominence in 1046 when Countess Adelaide received Otto of Savoy here, transferring the marquisate of Susa and county of Turin to Savoy control.
The museum within the castle walls presents artifacts and documents that illustrate the development of regional trade routes through Alpine mountain passes.
The castle welcomes visitors from July through September on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, with adult admission priced at 8 euros and children aged 6-16 at 4 euros.
Archaeological excavations revealed foundations of a pre-Roman command center beneath the current structure, indicating centuries of continuous military presence at this location.
