Castello di Marostica, Medieval fortress in Marostica, Italy
Castello di Marostica comprises two castles linked by a wall system stretching around 1800 meters (5900 feet) with four entrance gates and defensive towers. The two fortresses sit on a hill above the town and form a connected defensive complex that dominates the landscape.
Construction began in 1312 under the Scaligeri family, who established Marostica as a military stronghold under Cangrande della Scala's command. The two fortresses were built at strategic locations to control the territory and the trade routes of that era.
The human chess game played on the castle grounds shows how the community keeps its past alive. Local residents dress in period costumes every other year in September to recreate a legendary match, making the fortress a center for tradition and local pride.
You enter the complex through four different gates, each named after cardinal directions or historical references. Manageable paths connect the two fortresses, and you can explore the entire grounds in an afternoon.
A restaurant operates inside the upper castle, serving regional Venetian dishes while offering views across the surrounding landscape. This dining space allows visitors to enjoy local food while sitting within the historic walls.
