Collegiata di Santa Maria, church in Visso, Italy
The Collegiata di Santa Maria is a church building in central Visso combining Gothic and Romanesque elements. The structure features a tall nave with a bell tower on the north side, decorated portals guarded by stone lions, and inside extensive frescoes and wooden elements spanning several centuries.
A small Romanesque church originally stood on this site in 1143, later replaced by the Gothic structure built in the 13th century. It was consecrated in 1256 and elevated to collegiate church status in 1517.
The church is named after the Virgin Mary and anchors the center of Visso with its Gothic style. It has served the local community as a religious and cultural focal point for centuries.
The church is located on Piazza dei Martiri Vissani in the center and is easily accessible on foot. Note that the building has been closed to visitors since the 2016 earthquake.
A large 14th-century fresco of Saint Christopher dominates the entrance area and stands over 23 feet (7 meters) tall. This monumental wall painting from an era when such images promised protection to worshippers upon entering the church makes it particularly striking.
