Castello di Volpaia is a winery set within a medieval hilltop village at 400 meters elevation in the Chianti Classico region. The estate spans 900 acres of vineyards, olive groves, and woods while maintaining the restored medieval buildings and the outer structure of the 11th-century settlement.
The property originated in 1172 and became a strategic center for the Lega del Chianti during the first half of the 14th century. This position made it a key point between competing powers in the region.
The della Volpaia family built their reputation on creating astronomical instruments and clocks, with Lorenzo becoming close to Leonardo da Vinci. This connection to Renaissance art and science left a lasting mark on both the family and the place.
