Cima Garlenda, Mountain summit in Liguria, Italy
Cima Garlenda rises to 2,141 meters and ranks as the third highest peak in the Ligurian Alps, positioned between the Tanaro and Arroscia valleys. The summit features varied terrain transitioning from forested slopes to open grazing lands across its different elevations.
Over centuries, the mountain slopes transformed from dense forests into grazing lands that supported regional pastoral activities. This landscape change became fundamental to how the area developed economically.
The mountain connects to local shepherding customs, where different elevations were traditionally used for raising cattle, sheep, and goats. Visitors can still observe how these practices shaped the landscape they see today.
The summit can be reached via an unmarked trail starting from Passo Frontè, requiring basic navigation skills. The Rifugio Sanremo at 2,054 meters serves as a useful stopping point and offers accommodation for those planning to spend the night.
Since 2007, the southern portion of the mountain has been part of the Parco Naturale Regionale delle Alpi Liguri, a protected area for regional natural values. This designation means visitors experience the mountain in an environment with official conservation status.
