Collegiate Church of St. John the Baptist, Baroque collegiate church in Angri, Italy
The Collegiate Church of St. John the Baptist is a baroque church in Angri, a town in the province of Salerno in southern Italy. The facade features curved lines and decorative details, while the interior has a richly decorated ceiling and side altars.
The church was consecrated in 1878 and quickly became a central point of religious life in Angri. It was within these walls that Alfonso Maria Fusco founded a religious congregation that would later expand far beyond the region.
The church is dedicated to St. John the Baptist, whose feast on June 24 brings a procession through Angri that draws people from the surrounding towns. The square in front fills with residents, and the event remains one of the most attended days in the local calendar.
The church sits in the center of Angri, close to the railway station, and is easy to reach on foot from there. As with most churches, it may be closed during services, so visiting outside of main worship hours is a good idea.
Alfonso Maria Fusco, who founded a religious congregation here in 1878, was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2001. The congregation he started within these walls now operates on several continents.
