Castle Doria, Medieval castle in Angri, Italy.
Castle Doria in Angri is a fortress with two concentric tower rings, where an outer Renaissance structure surrounds a taller medieval inner tower. The building is organized with different levels and sections that together create a complex defensive layout.
In 1290 King Charles II of Anjou assigned the fortress to Pietro De Braheriis, establishing its role in the regional defense network. It thus served as a key strategic location for controlling the surrounding territory for centuries.
The Doria family transformed the fortress into a noble home from 1600 onwards, creating gardens with flower beds and ancient trees around the building. This change shows how military strongholds became residences for the wealthy.
The building underwent major renovation work between 2018 and 2022 and is planned to be converted into a public museum. Before visiting, check on current access and opening arrangements since ongoing development work may affect visitor hours.
The main tower contains construction materials from different time periods, including soft and hard tuff, pottery fragments, flint, and local stone. These layers tell the story of different building phases and the resources available across the centuries.
