San Rufo, Rieti, Baroque church in Rieti, Italy.
San Rufo is a Baroque church in Rieti featuring a simple exterior that conceals an elaborately decorated interior filled with characteristic Baroque ornamentation. The layout follows a traditional church design with an altar, side aisles, and various chapels defined by rich ornamental details.
The site was first recorded in 1141, but after a period of neglect, the church underwent major reconstruction in 1748 under architect Melchiorre Passalacqua. This renovation gave the building its current Baroque appearance and returned it to active use.
The church houses notable artworks, including a Guardian Angel altarpiece originally thought to be by Caravaggio but later recognized as the work of Giovanni Antonio Galli. These pieces showcase the artistic quality visitors encounter when walking through the interior.
The church is located in the center of Rieti and is easily reached on foot from the city center, positioned near other historical sites. Visitors should note that churches are typically accessible during service times, and it is advisable to wear appropriate clothing.
The main altar features a painting by Pierre Subleyras depicting the Ecstasy of St Camillo de Lellis, accompanied by an 18th-century organ positioned at the back of the church. This combination reveals the musical and artistic richness found within.
