Oasi Lago Salso

Oasi Lago Salso is a nature reserve consisting of wetlands and woodlands located near the Gulf of Manfredonia on Italy's northeastern coast. The area spans several hundred hectares and includes open water surfaces, reed beds, and wooded sections that together form a complex mosaic of interconnected habitats.

This site was once dominated by agricultural activity before being designated as a protected conservation area. Today it plays a central role within the Gargano National Park system, serving as a critical refuge for migratory birds and resident wildlife.

Birdwatchers come here to observe dozens of species in their natural habitats throughout the seasons. The reserve offers viewing points where visitors can experience the local wildlife and understand how the wetland functions as a living ecosystem.

Access to the reserve is best on foot or by bicycle, with several marked paths winding through the terrain. Early mornings or late afternoons are best for visits, when wildlife is more active and light conditions favor observation.

Researchers from the University of Oslo conducted important genetic studies on Italian sparrow populations at this location. Their findings helped document the ecological significance of the site for scientific understanding of the region's bird diversity.
