Palazzo delle Scintille, Exhibition center in CityLife district, Milan, Italy
Palazzo delle Scintille is an exhibition center in the CityLife district with an elliptical glass dome that rises above a rectangular floor plan. The structure combines glass and metal elements to create large, flexible interior spaces designed to host events, shows, and temporary displays.
Architect Paolo Vietti-Violi designed this building in the Liberty style, opening it in 1923 as Milan's first sports venue. The structure later served an important cultural role when it housed performances from the renowned La Scala Theater during its recovery from wartime damage.
The name 'Palazzo delle Scintille' refers to the shimmering light reflections that dance across its glass dome throughout the day, creating an ever-changing visual display. This interplay of light and architecture gives the building its distinctive character that people notice when they enter.
The center is easily accessible with well-organized entry points and enough space to accommodate large gatherings without overcrowding issues. Plan for comfortable walking as the interior layout encourages visitors to explore different zones and displays throughout the space.
In 2021, the building was rapidly transformed into Italy's largest vaccination site during the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating how its flexible interior could serve urgent public health needs. This unexpected role highlighted the structure's adaptability for critical purposes beyond entertainment and exhibitions.
