San Giorgio Church, Romanesque church in Arena Po, Italy
San Giorgio Church is a Romanesque building in Arena Po with three interior naves, where the central nave is twice as wide as the side naves. All three naves terminate in semicircular apses that structure the interior space and direct the eye toward the altar.
The structure was built in the 13th century on the foundations of an earlier temple from 1021 and underwent modifications over the centuries. A major restoration in 1930 reinforced the building and established it in its current form.
The church is dedicated to Saint George and displays the architectural features typical of Romanesque style that shape how people experience the interior space. Visitors can observe how the design directs attention toward the altar through the arrangement of the three naves.
The church is located in Piazza della Chiesa in the town center and is easily found by heading to the main public square. The building is visible and accessible from the outside, making it straightforward to approach and observe the Romanesque exterior.
The bell tower originates from the original 1021 structure and is among the oldest Romanesque towers in Pavia province. This tower stands as a rare example of medieval construction that survived over 900 years with its original foundations.
