Palazzo degli Esami, Rationalist palace in Trastevere, Rome, Italy.
The Palazzo degli Esami is a rationalist building in Rome's Trastevere neighborhood occupying an entire city block bordered by Viale di Trastevere, Via Carlo Tavolacci, and Via Jacopa de' Settesoli. The structure comprises four stories plus a basement level and currently hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events.
Engineer Edmondo Del Bufalo designed and built this structure in 1912 on commission from the Special Office of Civil Engineering. The construction represented a shift toward modern Italian administration that required dedicated spaces for state examinations.
The building displays a prominent inscription on its facade marking its past role in Italian state examinations. Visitors can sense how public institutions once shaped the careers of civil servants and professionals within these walls.
The building is located in Trastevere and is easily accessible if you are exploring this popular neighborhood. Access to exhibitions depends on current programming, so it is wise to check in advance what events are taking place.
Until 2013 this building served as the main examination venue for Italian civil servants, teachers, journalists, and other professionals. This long-standing role makes it an overlooked location that shaped careers for generations.
